About Us

Who we are

We were formed in April 1981.

Our Society exists to encourage an interest in both family history and genealogy amongst the people of Gwent, and amongst those living elsewhere who may have ancestral connections with the historic county of Monmouthshire.

We can give advice and we offer services to those seeking their ancestors, and also provide information about the availability of records within Gwent. Perhaps we can help you?

Where We Are

Map of UK
Map of Wales

Gwent, which replaced the historic county of Monmouthshire in 1974, is situated in the south-east corner of Wales and is often referred to as the “Gateway to Wales”.

What We Do

We hold branch meetings in the 5 areas of the County – Blackwood, Chepstow & Wye Valley, Ebbw Vale & North Gwent, Newport and Pontypool.

Our members have transcribed and compiled a large number of parish register entries, monumental inscriptions, census index entries and other records which will be of use to researchers. These are available though our on-line store.

We support each other in our hobby of family history.
