Blackwood – Join the Army and see the World!

We were pleased to welcome Richard Davies, curator of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh (Brecon) to speak at our April meeting.

We were treated to a fascinating 300-year journey through the life of what is now called The Royal Welsh regiment. Starting from 1689, we heard of the various reasons for forming a foot regiment, entering into many conflicts, amalgamating with other units and frequent name changes.

We found that our wonderful Welsh Regiment was present at every famous battle and engagement right up until the present day. Their proud record includes the Wars of Spanish and Austrian succession, Blenheim, Waterloo, Crimea, the Boer War, 1st and 2nd World Wars and more recent conflicts sadly familiar to most of us, and were rewarded with an astonishing array of medals.

School history lessons were never like this – we are all now ready to pay a visit to  that lovely museum in Brecon.
