Elizabeth Gillespie (28th Nov 2018) entertained us with a most interesting account of her search through her family records to explain the origins of the almost unique name Huntold- only found in her family tree.She revealed the strange events where her ancestors seemed to use the name Huntold (in various spellings) and Bishop at random. One could be Bishop in a census and at the same time Huntold in BMD records.

She finally discovered the origin of Huntold. It was a mistaken amalgamation by an enumerator of the surname Owld with a middle name Hunt- and the unique surname hence produced. Illiterate family members at the time could not notice the mistake-which was to be perpetuated in later generations.

The story of the search through the clues to the eventual clarification was a a true detective story.
